The Japanese Bonsai is actually two words, "Bon", and "Sai". The word "Bon" means "tray" and "Sai", "growing" or "planting".
When you look at bonsai - from the standard "chokkan" or "upright" style to the "fukinagashi" or "windswept" style to the "ishitzuki" or "rock-dweller," you will see the results of hours upon hours, and indeed years upon years of work.
While the needs of individual species vary greatly a good rule of thumb is 30% grit, 70% humus for deciduous trees, and 70% grit, 30% humus for evergreen needled plants, but these are just general guidelines.
